02Briefing

What we understand so far

Discovery is not yet complete — the details below reflect what we know before the questionnaire. Each card will be updated with your specific briefing, references, and preferences once we have had our discovery call.

Handmade Paintings

Your work is original, handmade art — each piece unique. The website must communicate that authenticity, giving every painting the space and presentation it deserves rather than treating it like a commodity product.

collections

Themed Collections & Curated Sets

Paintings are grouped into themed collections or curated series. Each collection tells a cohesive story — the website should present them as editorial experiences, not just category filters.

Custom Commissions

You accept bespoke commission requests tailored to individual collectors. The website needs a dedicated commissions flow — a form that captures the client's vision, dimensions, colour preferences, and timeline.

E-Commerce with Stripe Payments

Collectors should be able to purchase original paintings directly through the website. Stripe handles secure payment processing, with support for one-off purchases, deposits on commissions, and potential gift cards.

Relocating to London — Establishing Brand

You are a Finnish artist building a presence in the London art market. The website is a cornerstone of that brand launch — positioning you within the contemporary London art scene while keeping your Finnish identity and origins visible.

Gallery-Like Website Aesthetic

The visual direction should feel closer to a gallery or art institution than a typical e-commerce shop — generous white space, elegant typography, minimal chrome, and artwork that commands attention on every screen.

Premium Collector Experience

From browsing a collection to completing a purchase, every touchpoint should feel considered and unhurried. No cluttered product pages, no aggressive CTAs — a calm, confident presentation that lets the work speak for itself.

03Market Analysis

Competitive Landscape

The online art market ranges from large aggregator platforms to independent artist websites. The strongest position is one that combines gallery-quality presentation with a seamless, direct-to-collector e-commerce experience.

ReferenceStrengthsWeaknessesInsight
Saatchi Artsaatchiart.comMassive audience, established collector trust, strong SEO presenceHigh commission fees (35%), generic template look, artist has little brand controlCollectors already use Saatchi — but a personal site builds long-term brand equity and keeps 100% of revenue
Artsyartsy.netPrestigious positioning, gallery and auction house relationships, editorial contentGated behind galleries, very difficult for independent artists to list, expensiveAspire to Artsy's editorial quality and prestige aesthetic without the gatekeeping
Etsy (Art Category)etsy.comLarge buyer base, low barrier to entry, good for prints and lower price pointsCraft-market perception undermines premium pricing, no brand differentiationAvoid the Etsy aesthetic entirely — the website should signal gallery-tier quality, not marketplace
Jessica Zoobjessicazoob.comStrong personal brand, beautiful imagery, collector-focused content, editorialsDated UX in places, could benefit from improved shop flow and mobile experienceStrong reference for tone and personal brand storytelling — improve on the e-commerce execution
Mintedminted.comPolished product presentation, strong framing upsell, good gift/gifting UXAggregator model, artists share revenue, no individual brand identityBorrow the clean product presentation and framing visualisation concept for the artwork detail pages

Proposed Positioning

The website will occupy a distinctive position: the personal warmth and story of an independent artist site combined with the polish and trust signals of a premium gallery. Collectors can browse curated collections, read about the work, zoom into brushstroke detail, and complete a purchase — all without leaving a beautifully considered, brand-consistent experience. No commissions to a platform. No compromise on brand identity.
